 |
| لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ {١} |
1. I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) |
| وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ {٢} |
2. in which you are now living |
| وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ {٣} |
3. or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) |
| لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ {٤} |
4. that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. |
| أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ {٥} |
5. Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? |
| يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا {٦} |
6. (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". |
| أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ {٧} |
7. Does he think that no one has seen him? |
| أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ {٨} |
8. Have We not given him two eyes, |
| وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ {٩} |
9. a tongue, and two lips? |
| وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ {١٠} |
10. Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? |
| فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ {١١} |
11. Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba |
| وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ {١٢} |
12. Would that you knew what Aqaba is! |
| فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ {١٣} |
13. It is the setting free of a slave |
| أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ {١٤} |
14. or, in a day of famine, the feeding of |
| يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ {١٥} |
15. an orphaned relative |
| أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ {١٦} |
16. and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) |
| ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ {١٧} |
17. the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. |
| أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ {١٨} |
18. These are the people of the right hand. |
| وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ {١٩} |
19. As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left |
| عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ {٢٠} |
20. who will be engulfed in the fire. |
